The English Studies Institute is a language school that provides high quality English instruction and builds bridges of understanding worldwide.

While not affiliated with UC Berkeley, the Institute was created by several faculty and staff of the former UC Berkeley Extension English Language Program and our classes are located on the UC Berkeley campus, so students can benefit from its unique academic atmosphere.

The mission of the English Studies Institute (ESI) is to provide quality instruction in English as a Second Language (ESL) and build bridges of cross-cultural understanding by connecting international students with Berkeley students and the larger Bay Area community. Classes are designed to increase student proficiency in English for a variety of professional, academic, and social purposes.

English Language Courses

Integrated Skills     Improve your Academic English skills.  An in-depth focus on: Listening comprehension; Speaking/pronunciation, Reading, and Writing.  Integration of in-depth language and critical thinking skills.  includes TOEFL practice sessions and conversation exchange with native speakers.

Communication Skills   Learn "Real World" English and explore American culture and society through cross-cultural contact, observations and projects.  Gain confidence and fluency in your spoken idiomatic English, pronunciation, use of American English rhythm, and slang.  Improve your oral communication, listening comprehension, and knowledge of American culture. Customized to your level, including listening and pronunciaion, TOEFL practice and English through film.

Youth Adventure    Improve your English listening and speaking abilities while participating in exciting group activities outside the classroom including a breath taking trip to Yosemite National Park.  For students aged 13 -17.
