While not affiliated with UC Berkeley, the Institute was created by several faculty and staff of the former UC Berkeley Extension English Language Program and our classes are located on the UC Berkeley campus, so students can benefit from its unique academic atmosphere.

The mission of the English Studies Institute (ESI) is to provide quality instruction in English as a Second Language (ESL) and build bridges of cross-cultural understanding by connecting international students with Berkeley students and the larger Bay Area community. Classes are designed to increase student proficiency in English for a variety of professional, academic, and social purposes. The academic goals of the English Studies Institute are the following:
